[12/22/01] Hey Ted and all, Joe Marshall, just wanted to drop a line to say hello. Dave and I have had two splendid years of recreational sailing in Plymouth. We have a little Town park on the Harbor that we leave the 21 at all set and ready to launch at a moments notice. As a result we have sailed at least three times a week all spring, summer and fall.John Wheeler just bought a real nice 21 from somewhere in the midwest and wants to attend a few races next season. The Hibbards may also attend as well as the Marshall Bros. Look forward to seeing all after our hiatus. We'll bring the antiques out for a good old time. Hope all is well with you and look forward to catching up on old and new times.See you on the beach.

[7/19/01] I raced Hobie 16s in the 70s.  I am looking to get my sons involved in sailing and am looking to purchase a H-16 for that purpose. I would like to know what types of youth events are available for boys age 12 and 14.

[5/22/01] My name is Jan R. Benvenutti. I'm from San Juan, Puerto Rico, currently living in Melrose, Massachusetts. I raced Hobie 14's in Caribbean waters for six years; would really like to get it on up here. You know how it is! I don't have a clue as to where to go, but I'm sure you guys have a great fleet full of hospitable sailors. My number is (617) 755-0482, or I may also be reached at jbenvenutti@hotmail.com.  Looking forward to a fun and thrilling summer. Hope to meet you soon, Jan.,

[1/15/01] Hello. I got a Hobie 16 last year. And better yet it was for free. I have a 21' Sloop (Mono Hull) that I keep in Padanaram. I took up sailing at the age of 44 (47 now). And up until now it has been more of the cruising type sailing. I got the Hobie too late in the season last year to get it in the water but will be doing that this year. Very excited!!! I will be signing up for the Learn to Sail event.

[10/1/00] My name is Liam, and I am a 19 year old college student from Amston Lake, Conn.  Whenever there is wind I sail my hobie 16, until the ice sets too thick over the lake.  Although I have never sailed in the ocean, I plan to by summer, and perhaps join the fleet. See ya out on the wire.  [Gungho='A']

[5/7/00] Greetings, I live in Boston.  I have recently purchased a Hobie 18.  I have been sailing for many years, mostly monohulls.  I am looking for a place to keep and sail my cat if I can find a place in the Boston area (within an hour drive ).  I describe myself as a gun Ho racer becuase that is the way that I do most things.  I have not done much racing to-date but would like to in future.

Hi - I am so glad I found you  - I am a Hobie Sailer out of Marshfield, MA - I am looking to update/upgrade my boat.  I would like to stick with the 16.  We keep it on the beach and it is easier to manage than anything bigger.  If you do anything around the south shore area, I would love to participate.

I will be in touch - but in the meantime, if you know of anyone looking to sell a hobie 16, please send them my way.

Have just moved to Atlanta, Georgia (from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania - originally from Worcester, Massachusetts) with a son at Roger Williams University.  I have the Hobie 18 and would welcome opportunities for the college student to crew.  We have three Lasers (one of them in Bristol, Rhode Island) so that I and my two sons can sail together.  The Hobie has been with us two seasons and has been a joy.  Prior mono-hull day-sailors we used to enjoy are history.

2nd year owner of older Hobie 16 (great shape). Our family has come a long way in sailing her. It has been a lot of fun. Our kids, ages 15, 14, and 10 are getting better than us! They hope to compete (for fun) soon.

Hi Scot! [Baker] [et al]
You may not remember us, David and Yvette Thair, the British couple who had MANY fun weekends with Fleet 28 (and Fleet 441) back in 1995 and 1996.  We are living in Florida and missing all the enthusiasm you lot have in the Northeast for Hobie sailing.  We sail now with the St. Simons Surf Sailors (website address: www.darientel.net/~surfsail) and have a wonderful time.  I have just read Ted Knowlton's article of his sail around Martha's Vineyard - what a great story.  It reminded me of the day David and I sailed from Gooseberry Point through the Elizabeth Islands and landed for the first and only time on Martha's Vineyard in summer of 1996.  We also had perfect conditions and a brilliant sail!  We were back in a three hours, though.  We did not have the preparation for circumnavigation.   See latest Catamaran Sailor [June 99] for our heroic finish in this years Mug Race on the St. John's River, 45 miles as the crow flies.  Upwind all the way, 25 to 35 mile a hour winds, 65 degrees, racing for 7.25 hours!  We think we sailed a total of about 80 miles that day.  Only two Hobie 16's finished (6 started).  200 entrees, 140 boats started and only 60 finished.  Thanks again for the information.  Say hi to all who remember us.

Great website!Nice to see some of the wonderful characters I've met from the fleet. I'm a beginer, hoping to launch my 17 in May or June.I look forward to seeing you guys at Gooseberry, and Quonset. I belong to 448, and am very proud of this association. The Hobie Fleets are really terrific organizations! What a great way to learn! Thanks! Hi...I am mid-40's with one teenage and one pre-teen son. I am looking for a beach-cat that will provide some adrenaline rushes, and with some de-tuned/shortened sail be capable of going out picnicing on Sunday afternoons.  I am very interested in racing and if I acquire a boat the racing venue would be your fleet. (Having raced 5-0-5's until the past couple of years I am used to high performance dinghies as well as the trapezing. I am also used to the 10 -12 hr treks down I-95 to get to Newport or Bristol.)  I think I could be interested in Hobie 20 and would appreciate it, if you would forward this message to your members who could offer a comment or suggestion on the boat itself, or my plan to race it with the teenager and throw some small/detuned sails on it for Sunday picnics with the family (Mom & Pop +2 sons)  Any other suggestions would be gratefully received. Also please keep me advised, I am interested in your early June week-end seminar. Looking forward to hearing from you.
P.S.  This is a great web-site.  My compliments!

My name is Brian Athearn, I live on the Island of Martha's Vineyard.  I own a Hobie 16 and have been sailing for about 4 years now and can't get enough...Though here on the Vineyard there are many Cat's but no organization...Sailing my cat alone is fun, but to be able to meet and sail with others would be great!  I have learned a great deal from plain experience but I am lacking in many other respects that could be gained from the experiance of advanced Hobie Cat sailors...I have tried to organize some things but have not been able to muster the effort...I heard your fleet goes to the Elizabeth Islands occasionally, I sail there myself...If I could organize a meeting on a day, maybe I could get a few people from here to sail over...anyway, great site, nice to see other Cat's when I felt I was alone in the water...Got my harness ready for summer and I am in the mood for some flying!  Please e-mail me back.

I am interested in learning to sail and purchasing a boat at some time in the future. I have no prior sailing experience, but would like to learn and become a reliable crew member to participate in events.

SJ and the kids including the new twin finners (Anika & Letti) are looking forward to the 1997 season. The new twinners forced us to change our mode of transportation, that ugly 1978 Winnabago ("Road Barn") is us. The 26' of barn plus 21' of Hobie is a sight. We want to congratulate Rick & Chris, the Worrell made our long Spring more enjoyable. The "Fringe" syndicate's LRP (long range plan) is to run a hull through some of the Worlds oceans soon. Our search for a vessel has been slowed from the twinners. Division 12 has the best sailors & regattas, we appreciate all the fleets for providing the venues for seeing friends and sail-racing throught New England.

Actually, I used to be an officer of Fleet 28. I think I was treasurer and ran a few races for the Fleet on the Cape. I dropped out of racing in about 1984 when I moved to the Cape. Think about it a lot and still remain friends with a number of racers. I'm pretty sure I took the picture thats used [for the background] on this home page.

Hi: From Craig and Jennifer Hackett We have a old, tired H17 and a Great Hobie 20. We are trying hard to become more competitive racers. One thing I would like to see the Internet provide is a common spot where you could check to see where the sailors are heading for a day or weekend of leisure sailing. It is always funner and safer to got out with another boat.

Hi, I am interested in participating as crew for any of the upcoming races. I have extensive Monohull sailing experience, and some experience on cats and tris - primarily 30 - 65 feet.  I am converting from monohull cruising to multihull sailing (I currently have a Nordic 20).  Overall sailing skills are very good.  6' 188lbs (male)  (ps) I checked all the sailor categories, because basically, I like to sail!  (and I like beer...)

Hi Ted. Great web site! I am a realitively new hobie owner. I got my hobie 16 last summer un July 5th. The first time I ever sailed it and one of the first times I've ever really sailed at all was at the Buzzards Bay regatta. I believe my wife and I talked to you before the races got started on Saturday to understand what to expect for the race. I am a tall thin guy and my wife is a short petite woman, maybe that might help you remember. I am really looking forward to this coming season. Not sure which Fleet I plan on joining yet but Fleet 28 is at the top of the list!

We sailed every weekend except 1 since June. I also have 2 alpha sailboards and I'm looking for a shortboard (since i really can't launch the SX18 myself on our beach). Right now Julie is learning, but I wouldn't mind a little racing next year.

On my way to the lumber yard I passed a boat yard with a 14ft? hobie in the yard so I decided to stop and after some talking was offered the boat for $350.00. Looking at it I found a couple of places it could use some fiber glass work on the tip of one of the (armas?)and some work where one of the rudders attach (gudjeons?). The sail is old and dirty but in one piece.Any advice would be great.I used to sail, race, and repair Sunfish with the Sagamore Beach Colony Club.

Hi, I'm Barry Sanders and I sail both H14 and H17 here on the West Coast of Australia. With 25 years in 14's and 12 in 17's you could say that I like sailing Hobies. I would like to contact 17 owners to exchange information about the boats. In paticular regarding the holding of the mast spanner on full travel wilst running downwind. I believe that it is legal to do this. Does anyone have any ideas about doing this? PS I also am building ( 80% complete ) a 20 foot ketch rigged trimaran ( that uses H17 amas and is 20 foot wide ) and carries both skipper and crew trapezing from the wing.

I'm what you might call a born again hobie junky.  Eight years ago I bought a sun bleached Hobie16with popped rivets and dull sails.  I sailed that sucked every chance I got that year,..but not once since,....Till this year!  After spending the better part of the last decade lying in heap in my brothers cow field, that little Hobie16 was brought back into service with little preparation.  All I had to do was replace a few pieces of hardware that the cows took a shining to and I was ready to sail.  I've taken it out 4 times so far this year and every time that baby's gone like a bat out of hell.  That is till I broke a rutter board last time out.  I guess I could fix it...  But maybe I'll just let it retire....back to the cow field. Does anybody know where I can get my hands on some cheep used parts?

We just moved here from Daytona's Fleet #80 and would be willing to host a sailing clinic:  on or off water in exchange for borrowing a decent boat for one of your upcoming regatta's.  Also, seeking assistance to participate in the women's nationals in NY.  Need a decent boat, female crew and sponsorship.  In exchange I will write a nice article for publication in Catamaran sailor and other sailing magazines, including local news media.  My husband and I are both  experienced sailors and would love to race together.  Due to tentativeness of our move to Taxachusetts, we left our boats (supercat 17, hobie 14 and stilleto 23) with friends back home.

My two brothers and I, who have had long-time interest in sailing, recently chipped in together to purchase an older 1978 H18.  In our younger days we sailed much more.  Long and the short of it is we would love to learn more about racing especially how you do it!  Do you have programs to help the greenhorn get involved?

I sail as crew on Bill Condon's Nacra 5.2.  We'll be at the Buzzard this weekend. Wondering about the actual location and accomodations (besides camping).  The lodging mentioned on the flyer is in Fairhaven?  How close is that to the regatta site?

Hi, My name is John Stephenson and I attend Emerson college here in downtown Boston. I'\''ve grown up on Lake Erie and raced Lasers, FJ's, Vanguards, and various other big boats.  I'm writing to you guys because there's never been an active Hobie fleet on lake Erie and I've always wanted to sail on Hobiecats.  In fact I'm really hot to buy a used 16 or 17 and would love to try one out before I make my purchase.  Would it be possible this fall or next spring for me to come by and hitch a ride with someone from your fleet?  I've been sailing lasers up here on the Charles, but the 60 degree wind shifts whenever there's a north wind is starting to piss me off.  Thanks for your time.

own a Holder 20 (Hobie monohull) and I am looking at a hobie 18, some times less is more.  The holder is fast 10 kts regularly without putting up the spinaker and I can take the cats if the race is dead up wind.  Damn those cats look fun, I wonder if my wife will think I'm nuts for having two sail boats. My e-mail doesn't work yet, its a long sad story.

Cool pictures!  I'm a member of Dallas Hobie Fleet 23 and have been totally bitten by the Hobie bug.  Last weekend (9/28/97) I had my first experience soloing my 18 while out on the wire.  What a rush!  Come on down to Dallas if you want to sail late or early in the year.  We don'\''t really need wet/dry suits until late October, and can usually stop wearing them by May.  We sail on Lake Lewisville on weekends, but hold our regattas on Lake Texoma (see our website for directions - www.hobiefleet23.org) - this weekend is the Dallas Regatta at Texoma.

Nice web page.  When I moved to Memphis, an old friend gave me a worn out hobie 16 with delaminating hulls. I did the repairs myself and eventually I got hooked up with Fleet 134. Started racing about 2 years ago and love it. Bought another Hobie 16 thinking it had to be the old boat and not my sailing ability. Starting to get better and hope to make it to one of your regattas soon.  The only thing I would like to see change about Hobie sailing and racing is an organized effort on behalf of all the fleets to to get more people out sailing. It truly is the best sport for a lifetime.

Hi all sailors, just got back into hobiecats after 14 years.Use to race a 16 but there was no fleet here (still isn't) on Vancouver Island, BC, Canada and getting off the Island to regatas was costly.Crew was also hard to find.I've made my own crew (3 kids) and plan on going in local regatas, sailing with mostly monohulls. It should be fun but without much competition! I'll let my 8 year old skipper. That should help a bit.I hope to get some cat sailors together and start some racing here. The Klopps John, Jean, Nicholas, Peter and Michelle. H18 Magnum. PS the fleet can help me by about 25 of you moving to Vancouver Island , it's very nice here! can anyone take a guess at what the PHRF rating of a 18 hobie is.

I was impressed with the "commodious address" inspiring to say the least.  And may your fleet grow inspite of the foolishness of Hobie head-quarters.  I own an H-16, 78 model, and few things I've done in 46 years have given me the thrill of "flyin'a hull" screamin' across the lake with my wife and 13 year old daughter on board and hangin' on the traps.  We recently joined fleet 23, other-wise we'd commute just to hear inspiring pre-race orations. (sure)  Any way, enjoyed your "Page" as we do our part to "get the masses sailing" and weaned of their addiction to carbon-monoxide and "ethyl" fumes.  Flyin' when I can.

Loved the meatballs again this year! [at the R.I. Classic]  Unfortunately our racing weekend (day) didn't go that well.  We've had better days.  Judging by the boats that were smashed I think we were better off on shore.  I still would have prefered to play with the other 18's.  Next year I'm sure. By the way, we were three boats from Fleet 187/Montreal.  I know it's a 9 hour drive, but from experience I can tell you it is as easy to do it up and down as down and back up.  See you at the OKA CHALLENGE in 1998. I've been sailing my Hobie 16 for 14 of my 27 years on this watery planet.  Started sailing on a Y-Flyer, Windsurfer (original, no wooden booms though)and a Laser.  I'm currently trying to sneak away from
graduate work in geological oceanography to get in a few days on the water and on the wire.  The Indian River Lagoon offers beautiful sailing, though I'm glad I don't have any daggerboards to worrying
about (average depth is ~6 ft.).  Steady winds.  Perfect for soloing a H-16.  Anyway!  Have fun, see ya on the water.
